I personally perfer fan subs because usually when a show is dubbed the characters end up with weird voices, and a lot of stuff is edited out.

What is your opinion?

The main reason why the voices end up 'weird' is because the people are from different countries. Original un-dubbed versions 'sound better' is because you don't recognise the people's voices. Wheras if they were dubbed, they'd be people from your country, who you've heard several times before from different shows.

In saying that though, alot of them can't voice act, so I'll go with subs.

If it weren't for the fact that I have to READ when watching an anime with subs, I'd go with them. But I prefer to not pay so much attention to having to read everything. So, eh, if I had to pick one, I'd go with dubs.

You must not watch subs that often. I can easily read and watch a movie or show with little to trouble. I'd suggest learning how to read fast. ;)

No, I watch plenty. Bleach, Onegai Teacher, Samuria Champloo, 08th MS Team, Tenjou Tenge, FLCL, Chobits, Words Worth, are the current ones I'm watching, and many more that I'm forgeting right now, and have seen in the past....I'm just a lazy bum. XD

Indeed. And it really sucks watching a live-action movie (Like... Brotherhood of the Wolf) in dubbed and the words don't match the actors mouths. When I get a Miyazaki movie on DVD, I watch it once in dubbed, then subtitles after that. This could be because my parents hate dubbed movies, so they always watch with subs. (Nearly killed me when I saw Akira Kurasawa's 'Yokiro - The Bodyguard' in dubbed after watching it all my life in subtitles)

Yall cant be serious-- yall are actually going to try creating another Sub/Dub War? You are all evil evil people! So lets go ahead and throw the Facts Out...

Subs-
Pros - Have a closer or more exact translation of what is being said, are cheap and easy to add to a show and to create compaired to dubbing, often comes with extra info when a phrase or saying is said so that you arent totally lost.
Cons - While many people CAN easily read Subs while watching some people cannot, with the speed at which some anime characters talk Subs can lag behind and become difficult to read (Excel Saga!), Some things translated do not make sense at all to people who dont understand the language (for instance if they say a pun like "Whoa we found the turtle!" *Points to a pot* - Kama means Pot, it can also mean Turtle as well as the weapon-- but they all have diffrent Kanji for their spelling)

Dubs
Pros- You dont have to read anything, you dont have to understand japanese to watch it, jokes that wouldnt make any sense in english are changed to be simular but funny, sometimes the dub voice actors can do an amazingly good job (Cowboy Bebop, Cromartie High School...), many DVDs come with the American Voice actor screw ups, "outtakes" or "bloopers" (and they can be HILARIOUS -- See Berserk outtakes, Orphen Outtakes, Midori Days outtakes... they are great...).
Cons - Sometimes American/English voice actors can be DREADFUL to the point you want to take a knife to whatever it reaches first (Love Hina-- sorry buy a Southern accent that bad doesnt fit her-- and "vrooom" doesnt translate to "look at me im flying!", there are TONS of HORRIBLE dubs-- others include One Peice, and even The Cat Returns -- ok actually The Cat Returns was wonderfully dubbed but they changed some of the words AND didnt have the actual translation on the Subs- only the English Dub subs are on it-- sorry Disney but "Hentai no Baka" doesnt mean "I will never marry you!") As hard as they try they cant match everything perfectly-- so stuff gets cut or changed a bit, sometime (not all the time) translations are made to FORCE an anime to fit a different group of people (example- CardCaptors- the WB (or KidsWB) butchered the show Card Captor Sakura- now this part doesnt have to do with the dub but they actually cut out a lot of it to get the MALE character into the story faster- trying to make it look like the Male was the lead character and not the girl the show is originally NAMED after-- now as for why the dub was so bad-- they changed NAMES they made Daidouji Tomoyo (Commonly called Tomo) "Madison Taylor" , they change Sakura's name from Kinomoto Sakura, to "Sakura Avalon", Li Shaoran to "Li Showron", Touya Kinomoto to Tori Avalon, Takashi Yamazaki to Zachary?! WTH?! -- i could go on with all the characters - as you can see there are TONS but the only ones they didnt mess with it seems is Kero and Yue... -- they also change diologe to make certain things seem normal or hid things like one of the young girls REALLY likes her male teacher-- to the point that it ALMOST seems creepy - but ya wouldnt think that from the English version-- afterall the only thing they tried to keep in the english was the characters fighting with supernatural forces! which was hardly the point of the show!!!)

Err-- anyways back to the CONS of Dubs-
While many Voice actors take their work seriously (or rather want to do it well) they dont get payed enough to work on developing there character if they really dont want to (some voice actors put a lot more into their work than others) so you end up with a decent voice for the character-- but no emotion - so the voices sound distant from the character-- making them look more like puppets than characters.

Sub vs Dub is often an opinion-- its ok to like dubs- its ok to like subs-- Subs ARE technically better MOST (not all) of the time-- but some DUBS are WONDERFUL and bring something extra to the show-- but with Dubs its hit or miss-- Subs are usually good enough for anyone.
And the excuse "i dont wanna read while watching TV" is the absolute worse excuse anyone can use-- if you say it- you look like an idiot-- people often look down on those to lazy to read a couple of lines when you are capable of doing so-- you read (if you can read) all the time without even noticing it- driving- signs etc - your always reading them weather you realize it or not, it becomes the same way with Anime-- sometime if you watch enough Subs you almost feel like the Japanese actors are speaking perfect English.
Now without that excuse many people have no reason to not like Subs- best answer would be to say "I really dont know I just prefer to hear it in english" even if you are actually to darn lazy to read...

As for me-- i like a lot of Dubs - if you watch an anime only in Subs and then listen to a dub and you think "wow this sucks" thats not the case at all OFTEN-- its because your thinking "it should sound more like this"--- your brain is saying something is horribly wrong because you have SEEN and heard this before-- but something is different. Best Example- Naruto-- the English is really not that bad--- some of the translations SUCK ("Im gonna destroy you" because aparently destroying someone is nicer than killing them... weird...) but Kakashi has a relaxed Tone and can be serious-- that fits him- Naruto is LOUD and ANNOYING! GOOD! hes suposed to be annoying and loud! 80% of the characters sound decent now-- and they are JUST now getting into character-- give em some time and listen to it-- get used to it-- then you will see exactly what i mean.

I'm going to be frank with all of you and say that it depends on what you watch first.

This is true. Let me take Nadesico, The Twelve Kingdoms, Photon: Idiot Menace, Full Metal Panic, Mobile Suit Gundam and Fatal Fury: The Movie as examples. In the case of all of these, I watched them dubbed first. Fatal Fury and MSG were back from my younger years, and I got the DVD versions of FMP, Nadesico, Photon and The Twelve Kingdoms recently.

I watched all of these in english dubs first. Even on the DVDs, I chose to watch it in english. And the dubs were, in my opinion, very well done on all of them. The characters all seemed to have life to them, it was an overall good job.

Then, I decided to change it to japanese with subtitles, and couldn't stand it. The characters all seemed different, and just didn't fit with how I perceived them. I disliked it intensely.

The conclusion I can come to is that you build your views on these characters based on how they're voiced when you first hear them. You grow an attachment to them. And changing the style of voicing tends to upset you, because the characters are no longer the ones you know.

So I voted for dubbing, because it deserves more respect than it gets right now. And that's my two cents on the issue.
