Ooh, I learned about the war of 1812 last year. I don't remeber a lot of it, except that it was probably the most unimportant war ever, considering the fact that nothing changed because of it, and no one technically won the war. Oh wait, there was one incredibly important thing, and that was this actual quote from a military commander during one of the battles:

"Raise your guns a little lower."

except it showed the world what america can do, oh and it got the british off our coasts, AND if we would have lost, we would have become a british nation again. (not to mention the battle of ft. McHenry inspired the "star spangled banner")

Wait... are you saying that the war is the reason that I'm not speaking in a cool accent and I have to day-dream my way through that anthem during school assemblys?

baisically... why... do you have something against this country?

No we didn't win the war of 1812(it was about a tie), from what i remember it was about trying to get British to stop forcing American sailors to serve on their fleets. "warhawks" did try and send an invasion to take canada thinking the Candadians will accept them as their liberators from the British. The white house was burned down. But the worst thing about it was that it made Andrew Jackson famous for winning the battle of New Orleans against the British about two weeks after the war was over. (Andrew Jackson ignored a supreme court ruling, abused the power of the veto, invented "spoils system" politics, and was a complete racist against all Indian rights.) I also believe to song "star spangled banner" was written during the war after a man saw the American flag still waving on a fort after a night of bombardment.

If it's high-school history class, yes.

the reason jackson still fought the british 2 weeks after the treaty was signed, is because it was signed in britan, so it took about 6 weeks to get to the U.S.
jackson had no idea the war was over.

Yes but the fact it still made him a hero still annoys me.

What are you talking about?! America didn't win the war of 1812! and the British had long given up trying to rule the "colonies" the reason we went to war was over impressment of american sailors and Neutral trade with France (The British were fighting France and Napoleon if you recall). America thought we'd "show 'em" by hitting them in Canada but the invasion was turned back. The British mostly blockaded all of the east coast and would raid anything they wanted to keep it going.

America didn't win. If anything it was more of a "tie"

Quote:
The British could not celebrate a great victory in Europe fully until there was peace in North America, and more pertinently, taxes could not come down until there was peace in North America. Landowners particularly baulked at continued high taxation; both they and the shipping interest urged the government to secure peace.

America was having big money problems because of the blockade and Britain wanted to solve problems elsewhere. It was never about conquest except for america wanting to conquer canada, mostly everyone had better things to do.
