Chapter 4: A Names a Name.
The group moved through forest quite noisily. Everyone else in the group were running through the forest with speed. The only ones keeping up at slower pace were Alex, the tiger-woman, Hector, and Julia with the two little girls. Julia ushered the two keep going. Alex was looking around the forest, making sure they weren’t followed. Every time he stepped on a twig and snapped it, he expected pain to shoot through his feet. He didn’t feel anything going through him, and decided that his feline feet weren’t as tender as his human were. The tree line was beginning to thin out as they walked out onto a bank next to a river. Everyone had stopped moving, not sure what to do. The river wasn’t too wide to cross; the other side of the river was practically in swimming distance. The question was how deep was it? For all he knew it could have been man made, and was fifteen feet deep. The tiger woman stepped forward and asked in a whisper, “How deep do you think it might be?”
“I don’t know. For I all I know it could be man made. We should probably just- “ he replied back in a whisper, but something cut him off. Just barely over the low noise growing from the others came the sound of leaves rustling, and twigs snapping. “No choice, we have to swim across,” he said. Alex turned to the group and spoke, “Alright everyone, listen. We are going to have to swim across here. Those of you who can’t swim please raise your hands.” He moaned inside his head as those words came out of his mouth. He sounded like a teacher to himself. About five hands went up, including the two fox girls. “Alright then, those that can’t swim find a buddy to help you across. Get going now.” Everyone went into the water and started swimming once they couldn’t reach the bottom of the river. One pair of people Alex noticed was a brown wolf man carrying a dog man on his back. He could hear the dog guy let out a yip.
He saw Julia carrying one of the fox girls across, and Hector with the other. The only ones left on the river bank were him and the tiger woman. He walked over to the water, and dabbed his foot in. The water was pretty cold to the touch, even for the middle of summer. He started walking out into the water, followed closely by the tiger woman. Once his feet stopped touching the bottom, he started to swim. The easiness of swimming came to him faster than he thought. He had thought being a tiger anthro might have changed his ability to swim. He found it was actually much easier to swim than it was when he was human. Most of the group was already on the other side of the river from what he could see. He looked back to check on the tiger woman, and saw she was lagging behind a bit. He slowed down a bit so she could catch up, but she suddenly stopped swimming altogether. She had sunk beneath the surface of the water. Alex thought quickly, breathing in air, and held it. He dove under the surface the water, and started looking for the woman. He saw just a little ways off, and swam to her. He reached her in time, and lifted her face. Her eyes were closed, and she wasn’t trying to kick back up to the surface. He planted his lips on hers, exhaling air into her lungs, and started kicking towards the surface. Splashing and coughing, the both of them breathed in fresh air. “Sorry, I thought I might have been able to make it across. My just gave out on me for some reason.” She said.
“No worries, it was probably to be expected. Must have ‘cough’ been an after effect of the gas, and you waking up so suddenly. Let’s get across I’ll help you.” Alex said. He then grabbed hold of her with his left arm, and started swimming for river bank. On the way, she said “My names Sylveria Tayla.”
“Mines Alex. Just Alex.”
“Well, Just Alex. Thank you for rescuing me, and the rest of us.”
“What rescue? I didn’t do anything special,” he asked.
“Even if isn’t special, thank you anyways,” she said. He felt awkward about the whole situation. He didn’t think helping others escape was much. He just did what any normal person would have done.
They reached the shore, and shook off the excess water from their fur. Alex took off his shirt too squeeze out the water in it. The group had continued on into the forest. He looked Sylveria with interest. She was squeezing out the water in her silver hair. “Is that your natural hair color, or did it change during your transformation?” he asked.
“No, it’s not. My hair color used to be brown. I don’t know why my hair looks like this now, though,” she replied.
“Well, it looks beautiful,” he said. He clapped a hand to his mouth. ’Why did I just say that? My mouth is going to get me killed one day.’
“Um, thanks,” she said hesitantly. He lowered his hand from his mouth, and breathed a sigh of relief. Alex looked back at the other side of the river. He saw someone standing there out in the open. “Crap! Run into the woods, now,” he whispered. Sylveria looked back, and saw the same man as she ran into forest. She had gotten used to running with already. Alex looked back before leaving the bank, and shot mean look at the man. He ran through forest as fast as he could, quickly catching up with Sylveria. They both ran, but stopped as soon as they approached the group. They had stopped to get a moments rest, and dry off. Alex went ahead, and walked up to Julia. She was sitting on fallen tree with the two girls, all of them still drenched. “How are they?” he asked.
“They’re fine,” she said looking up at Alex. “They are just exhausted from running. They still have not spoken yet.”
“Really? Maybe they are too afraid of us,” he suggested.
“If they were, they would have been struggling against us,” Julia said. Now that he had chance to look at them properly, he noted their appearance in his mind. Julia looked like a beautiful fox woman. She had brilliant orange fur, with the tips of her ears being black. Her tail, hands, and feet being bright orange fur ending with white fur. The color of her hair on her head was fiery red. The two young fox girls looked identical, with black fur around their eyes, the tips of their tales black, and their hands and feet being covered with black fur. The difference between them was the hair on their heads. The girl on the right had red hair, and the girl on the left had brown hair. Suddenly, the brown haired girl started speaking in a language Alex didn’t recognize at first. She was speaking very fast in Japanese, and didn’t catch all that she said. (Whoa, whoa, whoa slow down. I couldn’t understand you,) he said, getting down on his knees.
(Where is mama? Where is papa? We miss them a lot,) she said.
(I don’t know where your mom and dad are, but I promise to help to you two find to find them,) he said. He wasn’t lying when he said it, but he sure didn’t know when he was going to be able to help them. (I don’t know when we can go find your parents, but I will help you as soon as we can. Can you both promise me to be brave girls until then?) he asked them. The both of them looked at each other then nodded to him in agreement. (Alright. Now then, my name is Alex. What might your names be?)
(I am Suieibu Saiyo and this my sister Suieibu Sora,) the brown haired girl said, (We are not sure why we were taken. Why were we taken away from mama and papa? Do you know why, Alex-san?) The both of them started breaking down into tears. Julia then hugged them, trying to calm them down. He wasn’t sure why the lot of them was experimented on. The mad man had given no reason to it. Alex stood up, and clenched his fist in anger. He looked around at the others that were unfortunate to be experimented on. He saw people who transformed to look like dogs, cats, wolves, and foxes. There were even a few people who looked like ferrets and raccoons.
He had counted about thirty people when the same gray wolf who questioned him earlier approached him. He looked a little irritated about something. “Ok, now tell me again why we had to leave from there? I don’t quite understand why we had to?” he asked.
“I thought it was obvious. They would have shot us, or, if they hadn’t, we would probably be sent to another lab to be experimented on. I don’t think you would want to live in a tube the rest of your life, right?” Alex replied, giving the man a question in return.
“No, but there was a chance they would have listened to us.” Alex started laughing a bit when he heard that. “You know damn well there was a chance. Don’t laugh at me because I know this. They would have listened to us.”
“Maybe, but I hardly doubt that the officials would listen to us. How would you react to a bunch furry people saying that a mad scientist did experiments on them, and flew away in his rather large base? I probably wouldn’t listen at all. About the most outlandish story I would have heard if not for the fact that I’m in the middle of this predicament. Now be quiet, I’m trying to think on what to do next.” Alex said. He made fair sense of it all, a flying base was a little hard to comprehend, and much less the fact furry people now existed. Stuff like this would probably create fear if revealed too soon. The young man started to growl a bit, apparently agitated at Alex. “Alright then, tell me who made you leader huh?” he barked.
“It was a small vote before we left. Now be quiet, I’m trying to think.” Furious at Alex, the wolf threw a punch, aiming for Alex’s face. Alex saw it coming a mile away, and sidestepped the blow. He then punched the wolf in the chest, followed by roundhouse kick. The wolf fell to the ground hard. Hoping that the wolf had enough, he held out a hand to help the wolf back up. “You aren’t ready for fighting. You let your anger control you. That’s why I beat you in two hits. Now, if we’re done establishing who’s the leader you can help figure me out what to do next. By the way, I’m Alex.” The wolf reluctantly took Alex’s hand, and pulled himself up. “Samuel Sheppard, and whatever,” he said, walking away with his head in a slump.
