There I was. Sitting there, looking out the window and into the stars. Looking at the Earth that was once my home.
"LEO!" The Sergeant shouted at me.
I didn't really care right now. I kept sitting and even leaned back and crossed my arms. If only to spite him for kicks.
"Yes sir?" I said lazily and with one eye open to look at him.
"Don't you have duties to attend to!"
"Yeah yeah. Keep maitnence for atmosphere control. It's fine, that system isn't going to fail. At least unless the engines die."
I let my hat fall on my face. I could definatly hear him ramble on. But all I wanted to do was close my eyes and sleep right now. We just left Earth afterall. After the invasion, it was too early to do any work, and I was already homesick.
We were forced off our planet, so to speak anyway. Only a few of the starships that were ready for the masses. So only the rich got to go, that and maintnence and army men. So there I was. Looking down on the Earth, remembering the last words of my father before I ran and stowed away on this ship.
"Don't think about us. Just live to live on Leo. Don't worry, we will be alive long enough to see you return."
But those were his last words. Not even five seconds after he said those things he got hit by a stray bullet on our own damn side. I swear... I needed a cigarette. Even with the sergeant leering down my neck, and barking at me. I just casually reached into my front pocket and pulled a cig. Then into my side pocket for a lighter. Then looked up from under my hat.
Oh that man was furious. You could tell in the ferocity of his eyes. It was hilarious, at least until he ripped the ciggarets from my hand. Then he took the lighter and crushed it in his fist.
It was then that something came over me. I didn't know why, I knew I'll be paying for it at some point. But I just raised my fist and socked him. I sucker punched him right across his jawline. Well, I knew I would pay, and there I was. Paying for it. It just infuriated him more.
He raised his own fist at me and swung. I took it, flew a few feet behind me as well. Laying on the floor, looking at the blood on the ground that came from my mouth.
"Look son." He said, in his usual angry tone. "I know you're overstressed, but you have a job. Surly you must know what a job is."
That felt like damn near it. I don't mind that he hit me back after I sucker punched him. But insulting me like that, that was more than enough to piss me off.
"Listen!" I shouted as I stood up and looked at him. "I just saw my family die in front of my eyes before getting on this damn place! No one has given me time to mourn or settle! Cut me some slack!"
He walked over and stood above me, looking down at me and in the eyes. Just before he could open his mouth the warning lights flashed. I looked around, thinking we weren't the clear because of the red light bouncing around in the room. The sergeant went into a room that said 'bracing'.
"Are you coming boy?!" He practically screamed at me. I just followed, still new to being in space. I took a seat, then found the safty harness and wrapped it around myself.
"First timer huh? You better get your stomach prepared then."
I wondered what he meant, but then a voice came and stated there were five seconds before stellar travel. As I'm sitting there, pondering what steller travel was. I could see out the window, and saw the stars I was once looking at turn into long streaks of light. My body felt like it was being torn to shreds. My stomach as if it wanted up and out. It got what it wanted, as the contents splattered against the wall to the left of me.
Finally, that ended. The harnesses released, I was holding my jaw since it felt burnt as my jaw was still bleeding as I puked. Gathering my legs. They felt like they would collapse if I weighed only half of what I did.
The sarge left the room. Looking out the window I was just looking out of.
"Here it is boy. Our new home. Station Alpha-Terrin-1. The only space station built in the next solar system."
I just looked at it in astonishment. Wishing my father were here to see this. What he had wished to see for so very long. The marvel of mankind built here. Away from the invading force. We were hidden. I was eager, and starting running to where the exit hatch was. But my legs, still like gel, quickly gave out and I fell to the floor.
"Come on son. I'll help you to it." He picked me up and threw me over his shoulder. Hell... At least I didn't have to walk to the station from where we were. Probably better that way, since I didn't really know the layout of the ship.
