Yesterday as I was doing some 3D modeling, I decided to look for a newer version of XSI, and on their website the program (full version and all) was in the download section. I thought : "Oh yeah ! Don't have to look on the internet for it" just to install it on my pc and getting a registration page that HAVE to be completed with a registration code.

I mean, why are they putting the full version of the program (as a student, it could help me for my portfolio) if it's only the say you fell for it. I know that it could be for people who actually bought the program and lost their cd/dvd, but it's lame for the people who actually need it because their other free version (MOD tool), is lame with the cameras.

*is crying in a corner  *

Maybe it is just a Dumbed-down version (Like Gmax 3ds max) or you still need a key lol

No, I really need the key XD, if I do cancel an alert box appears and say something like, unable to verify registration code, and then, nothing.

I refuse to use those [sarcasm][/sarcasm] tags. They are just silly.

Woot! Another 3D person.

That said, I doubt you will get a free version of any decent 3D programs through official channels. Now, if you have the right contacts and know where to look..... *coughs*

I am curious... What do you mean when you say it is lame with Cameras? (Keep in mind I never used what you are using)

I don't know how much you know in 3D, but I'll just say something before I rant on those camera :P. First there is the camera in space (X,Y,Z) that looks directly to the root in space(another X,Y,Z). With MOD tool I found 3 different types of cameras (just one in the recent version). When you have nothing selected, you turn around the root, and the root doesn't change is position in space.

When there is an object selected, it's kinda hard to explain but you can turn the camera ..... let's see, take the object and make it like it was a sphere (even though its a cube or whatever) the camera will always change from where the center of the object is, the camera will change place accordingly (does that word even exist O.o) between the root and the middle of the object (the root always change positions, so you can't really go where you want easily.

Third type of camera (two wasn't enough :x ) depend of where the polygons (or points) are selected, it takes the average of those informations and make it a center, where the camera and again the root move.

Well, I hope I didn't lost you too much (tried my best to explain those cameras). It's just that the only good camera they give you is when you have nothing selected, which is not really interesting when you're dealing with a complex object :(

Edit : After reading this block of text again, I decided to make something less complicated. If there is something selected in the scene, the camera and his root change depending of what is currently selected.

And fastchapter indeed gives good advices ^^

That's actually more or less the method I am used to, the camera changes position as you look around centered around the selected object and/or polygons within. If no object is selected, the camera changes it's angle and viewing direction from the point it currently exists at, with the exception of specifically moving it forward/back/left/right.

One way to help make sure you keep your bearings is to make a Camera Object and find a position and display angle you like for the scene, and use a second one to move around the scene while working on it. It also has the added advantage of being able to manually input position and direction data for the x,y,z, plane and not have to 'travel' it everywhere and assume.

Of course, I don't know how well the program handloes camera objects that you can switch between to view. I like them for finalizing a scene, because you can child a light to the object and have it always be a relative to the direction you are looking and position.
