I just got back from a martial arts class my friend took me to, and it was fantastic. I didn’t think he was serious about it ninjutsu at first, but apparently it is. I am learning martial arts techniques from a ninja. How cool is that? And for once in my life my friend actually found a instructor who teaches as a profession and not as a hobby, that’s a good sign. I might just stick with this one, too, well, be ninja. A 6 foot tall Irish ninja.

But it got me thinking, who else here does martial arts? I remember a bit of a discussion a while back in a locked thread, and now I’m curious. So does anyone on this forum practice? Come on, don’t be shy, even the silly ones like Capoera count.

So… Thoughts?

A friend of mine is training to become an MMA fighter and he teaches me some moves from time to time. You'd never think he would be as fast as he is considering his size.

Well I'm training myself by myself, but that's a little slow. I don't have the money at the moment to afford a tutor. I guess I'm just stuck training alone. The only thing that's pushing me forward is a determination to become stronger. If you want to learn martial arts go for it. Just know that you need to be serious to learn martial arts.

I don't do any martial arts, they always seemed interesting to me though. If you youtube, crazy boy fighting, there is a group of people near me that have a fighting league called that and they should have youtube videos up, i have had multiple people tell me to do that though.

I used to have a friend back in high school who attended a judo class downtown from where I live. He's a skinny little guy, barely any muscle mass that you can see, and pretty much the stereotype of every character in "Revenge of the Nerds." Heh, we were pals.

Oddly enough, my gangly pal took my 6'5'' [censored] to the floor during one of our Phy-Ed classes when I told him he /couldn't/ bring me down with his judo-stuff.

You gotta watch out for the little ones.

I did jiu jitsu for about half a year once (I was pretty young, 12 or 13). At first it was great fun and interesting and I was happy I finally found a kind of sport I liked (was the typical WoW gamer back then: pale and lazy). But I soon lost interest, as we didn't learn anything new after a while and only repeated the old moves over and over again. Got pretty boring so I left eventually.

I recently got my Black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do. And the day after the test for Black belt I pulled something in my chest, it felt likeI popped a rib out of place. I'm just glad it didn't happen the day before.

Just got my Black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do as well. Just after that, my old class disbanded, so now I'm taking MMA. May be going to a Kuk Sool Won gym, all depending.

Tae Kwan Do seems to be pretty popular. I started taking it last semester. I also get one-on-one training from my black belt brother in Shao lin kempo, and a friend teaches me a little jujitsu from time to time. Of all the styles, kempo has to be my favorite. It seems to be the most balanced style, with equal emphasis on throws, punches, and kicks. I'm just starting to take classes at his dojo, and am really looking forward to it.

I feel as if I'm cheating for posting here. I enjoy Modern Army Combatives. But while Martial, it really has nothing to do with Art. It is logical, methodical and fairly brutal, but not artful. Maybe I can still be validated by saying I, too, have a BB in TKD. Got it when I was 16. Kept training but never had time to get my 2nd degree because I enlisted at 18 right out of high school. TKD is a great sport, excellent exercise and promotes health and flexibility. Also a beautiful art.

However I must, with a slight twinge of guilt, admit that TKD is just not very practical in the real world. Of course, someone with TKD experience will still demolish someone with no experience. And it once was seriously combat oriented, but has changed so much over the decades that now it's much more an art than combat skill. I learned more useful kicks in MAC than I did in TKD, which is fairly sad, because TKD is almost exclusively kick oriented. TKD never taught me how to kick the knee, or the thigh, or the kidney. TKD is power and aerial kicks, but no real tactical kicks. Never learn how to break bones or damage organs in TKD, despite the fact that doing both is pretty easy with a kick. At least when wearing boots, which the average soldier usually is. (Even when not on duty...those things are comfortable.)

But I will do it some justice with my closing paragraph - I may not practice TKD anymore. Nor do I use it much at all. I now maximize on MAC, which means I utilize both strength and skill equally, I favor fighting on the ground, and I don't fight fairly at all. People who fight fairly die. All go against standard TKD practice. However, I still maintain my ability to plant boot in face. And that is always a useful skill to have. It can end a fight quickly and is also incredibly humorous. TKD will always have its uses, even when one hasn't worn a gee in years.

I do Brazilian Jujitsu, Tae-Kwon-Do and Karate. I'm a black bet in the first two and am going for my Karate black belt in June, the 14th to be exact.

Yes, I'm crazy and have too much time on my hands.

aikido.
like this.

I remeber watching a Steven Seagal movie and going "hey! I've done that one! and that one! and not that one, but that one is pretty familar!" really, he just uses versions that look more brutal. Which requires suprisingly little variation from the practice versions.
