Donated blood a few months back (well, plasma), ugh... sicker than a dog after that.

Next time they want my blood they're gonna have to EARN it.

I've given Bloom many times (not recently though) and never had any problems :)

I gave blood twice in high school (several years ago)

Last time I gave I remember being able to run up three flights of steps and get back down without any problems or side effects what-so-ever.

Now I "politely" decline whenever they call

Red Cross usually does a pretty good job with me, but they wouldn't let me donate last time (waited in line for about 2 hours, too). Spent a little time in Nicaragua, caught e. coli, and now suddenly I'm one of the "unclean". Gee, thanks for telling me two hours ago...that would have been a huge help.

Of course, I once had my blood drawn by a man from Transylvania -- had some good laughs with that (I'm sure he never gets tired of those jokes).

Yeah, I've never given blood, but my mom's a vampire... This has nothing to do with this thread, whatsoever...

A fight to the death is the only way to get my blood. I hate needles. I'd rather have my arm cut open from battle and have the blood rush out then see them try to capture some. epiccc

My dealings with drawing blood run like an old Clint movie: Good, bad and downright ugly at times.

I've had instances where five tries (yes, five!) pricks with a needle drew nothing. This happened during an attempt to draw enough to test for various things (can't remember what all, was a checkup of some kind). I felt like a pin cushion.

In high school, I wound up with wounds in both arms, and bruises like crazy, but the needles wound up with tissue plugs, and they collected nothing usuable.

And yet, the very last time I gave blood, everything went smoothly, and I was outta there in no time.

and yes, all this despite the fact I get nauseous at the site of a needle.

Um, well, it's a good job I have good veins, given the number of needles that's been stuck in them. It's all because I've got CF, so one little cold to you guys but for me it's out with the blood in one arm and in with the IV antibiotics in the other.

I have had friends who had real problems where both Doctor and nurses struggle and they end up with more bruises than arm. It's times like that when I wish I could say, here use my arm, suck on that and leave my friend alone.

Rule 1: get the phlebotomist to take your blood, not a ward nurse or doctor. They may still be vampires, but they know what they're doing, and yor arm will feel hapier because of it.

Rule 2: If anyone, ever, mentions a "blood gas" test run like hell. This is where they... no you really don't want to know. Just run.

I'm a great candidate for blood drives, it's just that I'm so scared of needles, I have to fight down nearl 6 or 7 people in order for them just to STICK the needle in me....

I haven't ever had such bad luck. As a child, I hated lancets, so I had them drawing blood with needles for checkups as soon as they'd do so. I used to give blood regularly. (I haven't since I got my earring, and although I'm eligible again I keep forgetting to find a drive. :() The only trouble I've ever run into was a drive at the college, where I agreed to do "double red." This is where they hook you into an apheresis machine, and draw off your blood, separating the whole blood from the plasma, and they pump the plasma and an anticoagulant back in, so they take two pints of red blood cells instead of one. They didn't have a blood-warmer on the machine, and this process isn't terribly quick, so the plasma got to sit out, exposed to the air temperature, which is extra low to keep those of weak constitution from passing out. It was so very cold... Dropped my core temperature by several degrees, I have little doubt. Not a safe thing. I was very unhappy.

Most of the folks that do the Red Cross blood drives here are very experienced, so they have little problem finding veins or drawing blood. Also, I had an uncle doing it for a time, so I suppose I am biased. I don't have any particular fear of needles, though I will admit I don't generally watch them stick me (I did once). Those suckers are big! (They have to be -- red blood cells are relatively large cells and kind of fragile. They also don't have any way to repair themselves if they get damaged.)

Ah, the Alex machine. I've only done that once, and it wasn't too bad. I have a slightly higher blood volume than average, so it never feels like I'm giving a full pint. But when I did the double red blood cell count, it took forever. Usually I'm in and out in 5 or 10 minutes, but this took a good 45. I felt a little weak afterwards, but nothing too bad.

Never given blood before, but my school's DECA club is sponsoring a red cross blood drive on monday. Back in september, I hated needles and getting blood drawn. Since then though, no problem. I mean, sure, a donation is a little more than a little vial, but still...It's hard to get me woozy. Even when I broke my jaw, the woozyness was from the shock and not from the pain.
