Quote:
Gary Gygax, who co-created the game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69.

He had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm, said his wife, Gail Gygax.

Gygax and co-creator Dave Arneson developed the fantasy role-playing game in 1974. It became one of the best-selling games ever and influenced video games, books and movies.

Gygax' wife said he always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans about how Dungeons & Dragons influenced their lives. Many would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, which is about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, she said.

"It really meant a lot to him to hear from people from over the years about how he helped them become a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, what he gave them," Gail Gygax said. "He really enjoyed that."

Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters for themselves and describe their adventures with the help of complicated rules and unusually shaped dice.

The quintessential geek pastime, it spawned a wealth of copycat games and later inspired a whole genre of computer games that are still growing in popularity.

Gygax had been in declining health for several years but as recently as January he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons at their home, Gail Gygax said.

Funeral arrangements are pending. In addition to his wife, Gygax is survived by six children.

-insert lame references to failed saving rolls-

Poor man threw a 1.
Let's hope for good karma when he rolls for a new character, but we'll always remember him.

May he play dnd in heaven, 4th edition.

Awww... That was unexpected (Sort of)

Now I'm going to feel uncomfortable when I make Gygaxian dungeon jokes...

Some would say maybe he's better off not having to see what 4th Ed will do to his dream game. Turning our hobbit friends into swamp dwelling aquatics and turning the lightly demonic plane touched creatures into half devil freaks, turning one of the highlights of the game into a family feud (Dragon Kin fighting Dragons in dungeons and dragons...) and turning the tinkers that talk to much into mini goblins. I've seen very little that is good about 4th Ed. - unless they think turning a DnD Pencil and Paper game into a lame game like WoW...

I have no idea what you just said.

But I do have to agree... some things are better left alone.

Personally, I'm with Sage. You'll note it says that he was survived by his wife and six children, but it doesn't mention that he was survived by Dungeons and Dragons itself? That's because Wizards brutally murdered it when they bought TSR, and animated its corpse into a shambling, grotesque imitation of itself.

You'll be missed, Gary. I've heard such good things about your modules, and I must admit, the first edition is a lot of fun to play.

Lol to be honest I don't pay attention to the new edition :P
I hate it when the new people go against the principles and idea the original maker had. Sigh~
Unless it's truely for the good..but that's a rare case..

I have to reserve my opinion on fourth edition until I get a look at the rulebook and mechanics. If the fluff is a problem it can very easily be changed, but the mechanics can't

Though I can't put much stock in what other geeks say about it, as they tend to be a rather insular and reactive lot. Withing five minutes of the Gen con announcement of fourth edition, the RPG.net forums just exploded with predictions of woe. That just dosent instill much confideince in me regarding the logical reasoning of some people.

Though I do hate Teiflings, so that can't be good...

Still, I doubt Gygax was toohung up about the whole thing. He probably just wanted people to have fun.

Well im going to go ahead and start the 4th Ed Debate on the gaming forum- so we can leave all that talk to that forms and let people express their lost as this man whom many see as a "Son of Tolkien".

We geeks can't express all the fun we have had because of him and expanded our creativity.

Or his character became too powerful so he's re-rolling to have a fresh start.
