A cousin of a friend of mine is deployed there. He mentioned one of the hummers got stuck in a pit of waste water, took to hummers to pull it out....because Baghdad has no sewer system. Do they have any running water there? just how primitive is it? I thought parts were supposed to be as advanced as any "first world" nation? which is it? composite of both?

I'm not as far up as baghdad, I will be heading there in about 2 weeks. I do know that in Basarah (about as big as baghdad) they dont even have electricity, simply because the goverment has no means to put it up. Only major buildings such as the police department and the air port are "taken care of" or so to speak, while at the moment the citizens themselves are trying to keep power to the ice stations so they can atleast have ice. But I believe the part about the sewage, we even have a big pool of it near our base becuase they never completed the sewer system for the east side of the city. Thank god the wind is most of the time blowing in the opposite direction. The oddest thing i have to say about that all is that nearby water pools actually turned purple due to the sewage. as far as structures go, everything is either made of a cracking plaster or something of the sort, ive seen entire familys that live in a house made out of those pallets they ship things on. Most of them are happy though, believe it or not. I'll update when i get on up there! =3

Is the general reaction to your(the soldier's) presence good or bad? I hear a lot of conflicting opinions on that one.

That's totally awesome.

Anyway, how are Iraqi kids? And have you run into an SF?

It all depends on who you talk to. Most people around here in the south greet you with a smile and are friendly enough. Theres a few here who want us dead though. But that number tends to increase as you go up north. It really all depends on what area you are in. =D

THe kids are awesome, the ones up to about 12 years old are friendly and playfull, just like any kid you see down at your town in the park. I remember one time on patrol there was a little group of kids that came up to us and gave us glasses of cold water and some kind of pita bread for a snack. Warmed my heart up a little bit =) we all gave em some stuff in return, I gave one of the kids an LED flashlight that still worked just fine, I had to get a new one that had reb blue and clear lenses. The teens dont normally interact with us, they do there own thing.

While on a convoy to baghdad I was driving a 915 and there was a group of kids who always liked to stand at the corner and pelt our trucks with rocks and throw roadkill at us, screaming stuff I couldnt understand. So it really all depends on where ya are!

SF i guess your referring to Special Forces, and I see them here or there. Noone of them are stationes where I am at but they pass through. We got all kinds of pathfinders, presidents 100, there all here =)

I am going to assume you mean 60-70 percent? As 60-70 total seems a tad bit small...

Just remember to come home in one whole ALIVE piece, and I'll be happy.

and have you been over there long enough that a care package sounds like a great idea yet? I have a feeling a lot of forumers would be interested in sending one...

A loaded gun only bothers me if
1. the person holding it is careless/crazed/murderous
or
2. Hairpin trigger.

I grew up with guns around all the time. The only lock we needed was knowing we'd get our backsides torn up if we even thought about touching it without permission......Haven't lost anyone yet.
