1. What they said.
2. Firefox
3. Light stuff, use Windows Movie Maker. For more advanced stuff, use Sony Vegas.
4. No. Use GIMP. It's a free alternative.

1.Avira Antivir, Zone Alarm, Spybot Search&Destroy
2. Mozilla Firefox (Duh!)
3. Windows movie maker should be enough. Comes with any OS.
4. GIMP. All the alternatives tend to cost $$$.
5. EasyCleaner. Comes in handy.
6. Stick to XP to the very end! (Or until Microsoft makes up for the mistake and releases the new one)

1. avast/avg have good free versions... I personally use avast because it is far more configurable than avg (but that isn't necessarily a good thing.)
Also, look into zone alarm/comodo for firewall, and spybot S&D for anti-spyware.

2. Firefox. (except Chrome, but I try not to use beta software... which means I'll try it in a month or so...)

3. Look around at used software shops - I picked up a (legit) copy of Adobe Premiere 6.5 for ~$10.

4. You're a student, check if Adobe has any student editions of Photoshop - otherwise use GIMP/find an older version - I got CS2 after they released CS3.

5. CCleaner -- Updated fairly regularly, and (from what I can tell) does what EasyCleaner does.

6. Older computer --> XP (or Linux), no Vista.

Doesn't Zone Alarm have that bad habit of phoning home? Or was that fixed? Also, I agree with the assessments about XP. Stay with XP. Vista ish baaaaaad.

I didn't like the controlls of GIMP...they wouldn't work for me, but i have heard from many people that it is just as good as photoshop, in fact i have a book on it, and i had photoshop for a brief while, i liked photo better...but thats just me ^.^

Avast! free home edition rocks! Spyware terminator and hijack for spyware and zonealarm for a firewall.

Firefox for internet

Video editing...WMM if you cant spend money...i tried all the free ones...they either are crap...don't work...or carry spyware. if you do have money...studio 11 or sony vegas.

Gimp for a free photoshop or just a older copy if you have money.

XP or linux are your two best bets. linux 100% free and you get gimp and open office installed free (they are free tho XD) firefox is also already on linux and no anti virus really needed for linux. there are tons of good linux video editors....but you gonna look and ask around. I had one when i ran this computer on linux...but as soon as i got to 1GB of ram i moved over to XP for my ipod XD. oh and only the new ipods have problems with linux. if you have a 6G or older your fine....the 6.5G and newer will not work untill october and the touch and iphone do not work unless you jailbreak it and ssh into linux. hope i was of any help :)

GIMP is not as good as Photoshop but it offers similar capabilities at an unbeatable price point.

And well it's really be designed to be used on Linux where you can choose to use programs that has workspace/virtual desktop support and will allow you to stick the palette on the top. Mac has Spaces; Windows, unfortunately isn't very good at window management.

The GIMP developers have been fixing this issue for a long time and I think there will be more improvements on this problem in the next release, so stay tuned.

For the time being, Ctrl+B brings the toolbox to front.

unfortunately in my experience, on mac the X11 session they use to run gimp is unstable. while it is much more simple to use, it has crashed on me every time I have used it ( the instability may only exist on the 'mactell' machines, i have not tested gimp on an older PPC based mac.
