i noticed that when i view who's online, a lot of times i see that the majority of people on the forum tend to be in the index, waiting for people to post in their respective boards...which in turn leads to a lack of people ACTUALLY posting. i dont know if you guys are aware of it or not, but there is a place where you can view where people are in the forum, and what they're doing.

if this is the wrong place for this, or is pointless, the mods are free to move or delete this discussion.

well like i said, often times i check who's online, and most of them are in the index...i've never seen you monitoring the others.

Monitoring a specific board means you may miss out on the other 2 or 3 you go it.

The 'see who's online' doesn't work 100%; it can sometimes take 2+ minutes to change someone's status, and since people generally have to return to the index fairly regularly, it's likely that that's were they'll be when the list refreshes.

I wonder if this board works the same as one of my others...that one not only lists who is on the forum, but also who is on the affiliated chat...so the listing could have ten people on it, but all of them could be chatting and nowhere near the actual forum...
o.o

Our chat is not connected to the forums at all. We generally have 30-40 people in the chat room, but a lot of them idle most of the day.

And I don't see why it's weird for people to watch the index to see if there are any new posts in any of the forums. It's the easiest way to do it. What I think is weird is that you actually care where everyone is looking.

I tend to use "new posts since last visit" function...

That's probably the best way to go about things if you feel like seeing everything. Like Fooby said, maybe some people are only interested in a few of the forums. Back during the proboards days I'd hang out on the index waiting for PMs from one of my friends because that is how we would communicate (we fixed that after our inboxes filled up too many times). Now I tend to do the "read nothing, just hang around in the chat" thing which is why my post count is so low for being here since the creation of this forum.

The view who's online thing is useless; I leave my computer on the forum pretty much 24/7, so I'd say it's highly inaccurate.

Actually, it'll remove your name if you're inactive for a certain amount of time.

yeah, if you do nothing for more than 5 min it does not show you as active, just make a macro or something to refresh the page every 4 min.

technically i have not logged out of the forum for like a week, but i am not on the active list most of the time.

Or that one auto-refresher FF add-on thing.

i haven't officially logged out unless i have to shut down my laptop......which hardly ever happens btw. i think the longest length of time is like 1.5 months, give or take a week.
