UPDATE!!!!
the site is official>http://bluefoxx.selfip.net

so i have a friend whos consideribly better with computers than i in some areas[!--pride of the geek--] who helped me setup some warez to turn my computer into a server on the side
course, i have no domain so it is accessed over IP, and a non-standard port
point is, i can have my own website and do!
coding it in html, possibly javascript and css once i finish learning them[i learn't a lot of html in just an hour when i was 14, no chance to apply it or test it until now] completely from scratch in notepad.
i have a few pages madeup, all text as im still *trying* to draw, efforts mostly futile as i plain and simply suck at it. but i will add graphics slowly.
point here is, im also setting up a section im refering to as "The Server", purely file hosting...so far only music and programs i've downloaded so far, but if anyone feels like telling me how, i am going to make a section for people to upload files to share.
anything is allowed pretty much, just nothing over 200MB in size.
the site so far[and it may not allways work, so try back later if its not there as the computer could be down as it *is* my desktop system and i have no mirror to redirect to setup yet] is here and i have only started it a day ago or so, and given it total perhaphs 4.5-6 hours of work, but i will be steadily improving it...
if anyone wants to help out in any way at all, or store small files on there[small for now], small being <100MB[im on a 256KiB/s connection] you can find an address to contact me at on there
complaints and gripes are ignored, constructive critisism is fine so long as it comes with advice, expirence/wisdom and suggestions :\

thats all for now, i have to get back to trying to sleep or wasted efforts at drawing myself a character for some of the graphics...

EDIT: the html is in m brain. blast you bbs codes!

So I'm clear. The purpose of this site is like an Internet storage shed?

something like that XD
its partly for files that you say, searched for, will never find again and wan tto know wear to find them later. its also because i was bored, and needed something to do, and also, to see if i can. i also have to actually do stuff to learn it. and this seems like a good way to learn useful new skills. and also because i felt like making a website to share all the crap i have on my hard drive >D.
and if i learn to draw while im at it, all the better...
sides, my computer is on all day doing next to nothing, only off when i crash it, or have new hardware for it, may as well be doing something for the world :3 like giving free files with no ads or nasty stuff...though if i buy a domain i *will* install ads at the bottem of pages...to help pay for the domain and faster internet

This should really be Tech Board, shouldn't it?

Anyway, to the point: IMHO, the easy way to do user writable "shares" is either FTP (though that's not necessarily the most convenient interface) or WebDAV. The advantage of DAV is that most web browsers support it very easily and it acts very similarly to a regular "folder" on your computer. It takes a bit of work with your Apache configuration to get it setup right, but it works very well once it's working.

-- Additionally --
As much as I like SFTP/SCP, I can't recommend that because it needs a working SSH account. Unless you know you can chroot jail the user effectively, you don't want that.

I think you've still got alot of work ahead of you. I'm getting error messages and incomplete pictures everywhere.

Well, first off, the obligatory notice that downloading warez is probably against copyright law and its not good to do... yada yada yada.

Now on to the important stuff:
First, domain wise, try using http://freedns.afraid.org - You can set up either a redirector, or an actual DNS address for free using them.

User-uploads wise, How about a very simple upload page, something like I have Here for my own use.
Its good for small files, like say, music files and such, and works with any browser.

If you like it, I will edit my file.php script, remove the delete, chmod, and password, and overwrite file stuff(as anonymous users don't need such things), and send you a copy - all you have to do is place it anywhere on your share, and so long as you have PHP running, it will work, no setup needed(You may have to up the PHP file-upload limit to allow for larger files however).

FTP, I don't know about how to set it up for public use and make sure that people can't delete files(malicious users causing trouble = all files deleted), and such.
WebDAV, never heard about it.

Hope this helps!

Hey, um, BlueFoxx, why do you go to the trouble of obfuscating your email address when you write it out in the text, and then just go ahead and do a link to it directly later on the page? If a bot scrapes that, it's totally going to grab the mailto:// stuff. Personally I do Javascript obfuscation for emails, but at the very least, it's silly to obfuscate it once and leave it machine readable the second time.

Meh, I just dump it out:
Code:
<script language="Javascript" type="text/javascript">
<!--
document.write( "<a href='mai" + "lto:" + "//em" + "ai" + "l@" + "thep" + "lace." + "co" + "m'>Contact Me</a>" );
// -->
</script>

I'll be in trouble if anybody ever builds a harvester that can actually read Javascript, but so far nobody seems to have done so.
