I wouldn't toss the cheap stuff just yet. I built a decent desktop with 2.6GHz Dual Core, 512MB Video, 2GB RAM, 500W PSU, Keyboard and Mouse for a little less than $500 CAD.

The only bad thing is that I had to source a 40 GB hard drive from my school's Electronics lab. But I can get 500GB SATA for $70 CAD, locally.

If you want a decent setup and you have the cash, I'd definitely go for it, but for those on a budget, cheap doesn't mean bad.

oh, i know, I'm not replacing everything, I'm just getting some better stuff, it needs a sound card, and the video card is adequate but I have a 8600 GeForce from my old computer, and i really do need a new hard drive, maybe an extra processor, both of which i can by or salvage from one of the millions of computers around this place.

it can be done, at the moment i am on the market for a new harddrive as the array in my desktop is pretty much full now. I have got a 500, a 320, a 60 and a 40. then there is the removable drive tray and the shoebox of hard drives that i switch out from time to time depending on what i need. all the drives in the box range from 10-40 gig

if this aint proof i have no life >_<
