I have been having a series of problems that I think are caused by viruses. My question is: what are some good anti-virus programs?

I have had absolutely no luck with McAfee or Norton so some other programs only please
.

What the hell kind of viruses does neither Norton or MacAfee deal with?
Have you scanned it and all?
What in gods name were you downloading?

If it's spyware, there are various programs to deal with that, but make sure you get one that isn't actually a anti-virus program, but a virus.

But what kind of problems are you having?

I've run into many more problems with spyware than with viruses. My personal favorite is Ad-Aware, which does have the capability to detect some viruses as well. I'm a little less impressed with the new version than I have with previous versions, but it remains my favorite.

The festering hatred in my heart for AVG prevents me from giving you a link to it, as I don't honestly know the site name (http://www.grisoft.com, maybe...). Though I find it difficult to decide if I despise it more or less than Norton (at least since they removed LinkScanner), many people seem to like it, and it is available for free.

More than likely you have spyware than a virus. Unless you're blindly downloading from bitTorrent all day long, the odds of actually getting any of those old "Lovebug" viruses are slim these days. You really gotta try.

Like avwolf said, Ad-Aware will likely pick any problems up. But without telling us whats going on rather than "problems with viruses," we can't much help you more than that.

Ad-aware rocks...use that, along with A-Squared (there's a free version on the site), and you'll be sitting pretty...

Well, most of the problems have occured when I go to anysite with a connection to Google, and the page refuses to load and crashes shortly after.

Ad-ware would explain why McAfee and Norton didn't work. I do have some anti-spyware programs but adware is something completley differant.

Sounds like a browser problem, not a virus. I'd run some spyware filters and see if it picks something up.

Agreed. What's your browser?

It might be worth downloading a "spare" browser and see if it works better, but my guess is that you've got something like what I ended up fighting the last time -- a nasty little proxy server that grabbed requests to certain sites. That bugger was a nightmare to remove. I had to do it by hand in the end. In my case, it resulted in being unable to visit DA or FA (which was down anyway, but still). Let's hope that that's not the problem but it's a possibility.
