"You do not know what they will do to you" does not bode well. Sounds like poor Natani may have had some more traumatic exeriances than the loss of one's parents :(
We still dont know how she lost sight in her now-grey eye... it can happen from just being beaten really hard and taking a few blows to the side of the face, blows that you would otherwise survive (Seabiscuit, anyone?). I can just imagine such a scene upon her discovery... or during the brotherhood's 'training' and/or other missions. As for other theories... well, I dont want to use the R-word. Even though the gender-focused trauma would definitely be something to make her reject her gender all the more violently and also make her thoughts avoid turning to the past... call me silly for wanting to spare a character, but I hope that its something as (relatively) simple as the first theory, and not this second one.
I think one of the more powerful panels is meant to be the sixth one... showing nothing but the knife and the pieces of hair on the stump. Perhaps on one level it's childish extreme action... but it makes me wonder what we'd see if we had a comic devoted to Natani just sitting there on the stump, knife in one hand, fingering her hair with the other... what thoughts went through her head before gritting her teeth to do the deed.
And one other piece in this comice, about Zen... I can only imagine how he felt, going from saying "Youre my only sister, Natani. You're all I've got left, now" to hearing her say "I'm not your little sister anymore." We're focusing on how Natani innocently or not-so-innocently makes such a life-changing decision... but dont forget that in doing so, she killed the last of the family that Zen had... prior to whatever it was that destroyed their home.
Overall, this is a VERY good time to toss in a brief flashback that gets snapped back to the present at the end... not long enough for us to think there'll be more of it tomorrow, but enough to give us a LOT to think about.
