I'm writing a story about a genetically uplifted male red fox. His vulpine fiancee leaves him just as he's about to enter college (the plan was they would attend together). So instead of blowing off college and staying near home to find another mate, he goes to college New York state.

Big problem. There are very few of his kind living in the world and most of them live in Texas. So the poor guy ends up driven by his instincts and hormones to drop out of college and disperse. He does manage to create a lucrative career as a business consultant--the fox brain works a bit differently than the human brain and they have a reputation of being able to solve difficult problems.

------
In my story he falls into a situation (a crucible) that causes him to become desperate to find a mate. So he starts dating a human woman half his age (a senior in college). She needs to learn to deal with a BF who sheds, has scent glands instead of sweat glands, pants when hot, likes to sleep with the window open, thinks a lover is for kissing and biting, and is struggling with the idea of even having a human as a lover (he had some bad experiences back in college). She is the one driving this relationship and is the "aggressor".

On the other hand, he is learning to deal with human sexuality, which seems out of whack to him because foxes only have one heat cycle per year and his new GF seems to be able to switch her "heat cycle" on and off at will. She also doesn't quite smell or look right. On the plus side she's small for a human (5' 2") and has a "girlish" figure--so in profile she resembles a vixen--who don't protrude nearly as much as the typical human unless they are lactating (eight teats). But it helps him that he's spent his entire adult life dealing with humans.

Besides each other, they need to deal with: her family; his family; and everyone else including gossipy neighbors, her ex-BF, and the religious right.

Fun ideas! And I've done quite a bit of research on our respective species.

------
So no one has mentioned some of the negatives--such as a lover who sheds. Do y'all really want to wake up covered in loose fur every morning?

And let's talk "equipment", for the female humans in the group: So feline guys have barbs, and canine guys have a knot....

And for the male humans among us: Most female mammals who are not in heat are not very interested. Are you willing to wait? Okay, not a big deal if she's a Leporidae. But then when the time comes she's going to be very demanding.

------
Getting back to my foxes. When Valentine's Day rolls around, they basically all take a vacation and cocoon at home. The lovers keep an eye on each other, lest some interloper should grab a little on the side. In my storyverse the female peak is sharper and more intense than the male--so she drives the encounter. And if an unattached female should find a male... well it would be socially unacceptable of him to turn down her request.

What they do with their teens, who are growing in sexual maturity a bit before they reach emotional maturity, could fill many paragraphs. The quick version is: The young teens get the "mom or dad is dominant and no sub dare have a hormone in this household!" enforced by jaw snapping and body slams. Middle teens get a pep talk about doing the right thing, the girls get an IUD fitting at the doctor's, both get fist full of cash, then mom and dad chases them out of the house for a week or so--spring break vulpine style! Typically the older teens (HS grads) simply move out and often will take a mate and start college or do something equally ambitious and adult.

------
So yea, I've thought about it. My answer is a firm, "Maybe!"

Scotty

Those are some interesting ideas, and should give me something to think about. A lot of the differences probably wouldn't bother me, they would just take some time to get used to. I think that if I were to really fall in love I would make whatever sacrifices necessary. But I can't be sure how I would react; maybe I'm just deluding myself. It sounds like you've got a good premise for a story, with plenty of available sources of conflict and emotional discovery.

I don't want to drag this topic into politics (at least not extensively), but how was Pinochet a traitor? O_o Whom did he betray?

Not if your were the one lactating. It's not that neat. Ask any mother who had to put up with it after giving birth.

Well, I wouldn't know, since I'm a guy. I was referring to experiencing the female keidran in heat and on the aphrodisiac milk!

I can't say that i would treat them as a pet as much as a "Sentient Being".
i would most definatly NOT use them as a Servant.
I could fall in love with a Keidran. I wish i could be a Kiedran...

i agree with the dark red there.

Thats very noble of you, but what are you trying to say? If you saw a man abusing his wife, that you wouldnt, or you would stop him? Are you saying you would treat a Keidran differently than you would a human? Treating one race differently than another, even if it is for good, will definately cause many problems. Being overzealous to protect a Keidran may not be much different than persecuting humans.

Exactly, the law that was passed saying that places of business must have a certain number of minority workers is actually discrimination against Caucasian males! That's just one example!

Im not sure whether or not that was sarcasm, but I'm going to run with it anyway. There are hundreds of thousands of dollars out there for college scholorships, for example. My caucasian friend (as a joke) said he was black on his SAT forms. He got about $30,000 in scholorship applications, but they were all taken away when they learned he was white. That really isnt surprising if you think about it, but how about this: we all know how many scholorships there are out there for being black. But have you ever seen a scholorship for just being white? No, of course not, that would be racist. I have made my point.
