My only hope is that Tom won't kill her off, 1. Because this might leave Keith Unstable, and 2. Cause I don't want to see her die (;_;)

I think Keith and Natani will end up together and I think that Eric will convince Laura to come with him on his ship. At that point Mike will be turned back into a male and then Mike and Laura will eventually get together.

I like how some people are saying that if Laura died, it would leave Keith mentally unstable. Because, you know, his psyche is doing so well now. (:

I'm kidding. I could almost see it being one of those moments where Keith and Natani have resolved everything, and Keith is saying, "You know, I think things are finally looking up for me-" *cue Laura's death*. Though I do hope that, if she must die, she dies a hero, somehow, diving in front of Keith last minute just as someone/thing is about to kill him.

I'd have mixed feelings about seeing her go. On the one hand, she hasn't done anything to warrant being killed. On the other hand, she hasn't done anything to warrant being killed yet.

And on a side note: What flash back is everyone talking about?

Dangit this topic is as slow as molasses. Does anyone even care about Laura? :( , Cross that I bet many see her as such a background character that they don't even bother (;_;)

Actually, a lot of the forumgoers actually dislike Laura. It's not that she's necessarily a background character, she's just not one that most people are very sympathetic toward. Often enough, we go out of our way to avoid thinking about her.

I've commented before that Keith is the man we wish we were more like. He's the character in the story who most represents those traits we find laudable and valuable. So for most of us, Laura represents that part of ourselves that betrays everything we value. The part of us that crumbles under negative peer pressure. The albatross around our necks. We pity her enough that few of us actively cheer for our demise, but it's rare for anyone to rouse themselves from apathy enough to really care about her fate. We feel that whatever happens to her, she has brought it on herself. She's trying to redeem herself for her mistakes, prove that she is stronger than she once was, and that's probably the only thing that's saving her from most of the forums outright calling for her head.

Thats deep :shock:, Im amazed you see it that way. Even more how someone could dislike Laura for such trates, Heck most of my childhood was like that. However, may it possibly be that many of us look in a pessimistic way twards what she did. May it possibly be a message, not blaming Laura, but in fact the way her society saw inter-species marrage? I ask you "Do you actually believe someone as innocent as Laura deserves a death as horrific as what we are contemplating?" :?

Livingontheedge mentioned that TwoKinds didn't have a lot of examples of what happens as consequence of prejudice, and wondered if Keith's execution of Natani could be explained as such. I still think her point is best demonstrated by Laura -- clearly, it was a mark of prejudice that drove the fear and concern of Laura's village. And Laura gave into it. She knew Keith. He was to be her husband. He loved her, and yet, when the pressure mounted, she ran and hid from him. He searched for her, day and night, until her village cast him out, and through it all, Laura hid. She never spoke to Keith. She never explained her concerns. She just folded under the pressure and disappeared. It wounded Keith incredibly deeply. Laura betrayed him, and everything he believed in. Keith came to believe the worst about her race, he gained his own prejudice and hatred because the person he loved thrust a metaphorical knife in his heart and twisted. To her credit, she realized her mistake and she has spent some months trying to redeem it, but she hid from Keith, and then gave up on him for years rather than facing danger to find him and apologize. Laura's made a lot of mistakes. She reminds us of our own weakness under pressure. She reminds us of the time we've run and hid, abandoned what was good and right for what was safe or convenient. We want to see her redeem herself, to prove that we ourselves can rise above these parts of ourselves. But we do not want to see her get the man in the end -- there's a palpable feeling that she doesn't deserve Keith any longer. He deserves someone who will never run from him, who will not betray him because the pressure is on, who will stand with self-control and courage in the face of the harshest fate. Her psychological damage aside, Natani fulfills many of those traits. She's a fighter. She has a rigid, incredible self-control. And she lives with honor, refusing to leave the group to their fate when it would have been easier for her to simply leave (when they originally met). Natani might be someone who can live up to Keith's standards, someone who would be worthy of him. (And besides, she's freaking gorgeous. :D~) We don't necessarily want Laura to die a horrible death (FastChapter's mostly joking -- he wants Natani to die gruesomely as well so that Keith will seek solace in Alaric's arms ;)), but we know that a good death could redeem Laura. She could, by sacrificing herself, prove that she's risen above the weak foxgirl she once was, and in that moment, her lifeblood spilled, she'd once more be worthy of our heroic Basitin.

It'd be an extreme add to the drama if we had Laura sacrificing herself for the mutual good and explain everything while dying on Keith's arms... Although do we really want to see something like that?

Because for the oddest reason I've been reading it "Natini" forever up until now.

Yea, as much as I would like to see Laura live the fate of her and everyone really lies in Tom's mind. But you strike a valid argument though. In fact I wouldn't be suprised if Tom uses the basis of that for his story, good job :)
